What GitHub Announced
On October 28, 2026, GitHub announced general availability for Copilot Fusion. Rather than choosing a single model for every coding request, developers can select Fusion and an effort level. The system decides which enabled models to use and can orchestrate several of them for a task.
How the Modes Work
GitHub describes three effort levels: Standard for everyday coding, High for more difficult work and Max for demanding tasks. It also describes three execution patterns: Single, where one model handles the request; Cascade, where a cheaper first pass can be escalated after a check; and Critique, where another model reviews an initial response. These are vendor-described behaviors, not our own evaluation.
Availability and Billing
GitHub lists Fusion on all Copilot plans in Visual Studio Code, its Copilot app and CLI, and JetBrains IDEs. GitHub says each model used is billed at its standard rate, with a temporary promotional discount for some paid subscribers. We are not presenting that temporary promotion as a permanent plan price. Organization administrators can limit eligible models through their policies.
Why It Matters
Model choice has become a workflow and governance question as much as an interface setting. Fusion may relieve some manual switching, but organizations still need to understand model access, auditability and spend. Teams comparing coding assistants should track not just the headline model, but how routing decisions affect predictable costs and code review.
Our Take
Treat orchestration as a hypothesis to validate with your own repositories. Compare repeatable debugging, refactoring and test-writing tasks across effort levels; record quality, latency, billed units and the review time saved or added. GitHub reports performance benchmarks, but we have not independently reproduced them and do not use those figures as our verdict.
Verification note. This report is based on the vendor’s dated announcement and linked documentation. We did not claim personal hands-on testing of a new release. Availability and pricing can change; verify current terms directly with the provider.
